Assembly Candidate Buffy Wicks Will Start Strong in First Campaign Filing Report
Long time activist and first-time candidate will report over $200K raised in first month, well-positioned to compete in multi-candidate Assembly District 15 field
OAKLAND — Assembly District 15 candidate Buffy Wicks announced today that she will report raising over $200,000 for her campaign in her first campaign finance report due at the end of this month. All of the over 600 contributions to the campaign were made in just 32 days; Buffy announced her candidacy and opened her campaign committee on May 30th.
“I’m so humbled by the hundreds of Californians and friends across the country who believed in my candidacy and propelled us to such a strong start,” Buffy said. “These early resources will help me build our Assembly campaign the only way I know how: from the grassroots up.”
Over 75% of the individual contributions made in this initial period were in the amount of $250 or less. This fundraising performance is historically strong among Democratic candidates for Assembly; only one non-incumbent Democrat had reached the $200,000 milestone at this same point in the 2016 campaign cycle.
“Fundraising is more than just building a ‘war chest’– it’s really about inspiring people to invest in your message,” said campaign Senior Advisor Addisu Demissie. “Buffy’s ability to raise significant money through mostly smaller donations speaks to her foundation and strength in inspiring the grassroots progressive community. We anticipate a competitive race and are confident that Buffy will be able to translate this early enthusiasm into support and, ultimately, into votes.”
