Buffy Wicks Statement on SCOTUS Ruling Against Workers in Janus v. AFSCME

Jul 7, 2018 | Blog, Press Release

OAKLAND, CA.  – Buffy Wicks, Candidate CA Assembly District 15, grassroots organizer and former Obama White House Aide release the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court of the United States ruling against workers’ rights in Janus v. AFSCME:

“In a time of increasing poverty and inequality, we need strong unions now more than ever.

For well over a century, unions have been steadfast defenders of workers’ rights and have helped many marginalized communities attain the American dream. Unions fight for safer workplaces, parental leave, better health care, job security and equal pay. These benefits not only help the workers being represented by the union but directly help working families across the board. People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake. Unions are one of the last strongholds protecting workers from corporate interests.

I’ve spent much of my life fighting for workers’ rights from the grassroots level to the White House. We need strong unions now more than ever, and I promise to keep up the fight in Sacramento.”
