Commemorating the life of Nia Wilson

Jul 24, 2018 | Blog

Our community is mourning the loss of Nia Wilson today. She was only 18 years old. My sincerest condolences go out to her loved ones during this difficult time. As a mother, I cannot imagine what her parents must be going through. This is truly a parent’s worst nightmare. A random, senseless, and vile act committed by a coward.

I believe it’s in moments like these, that the character of our community shines brightest. Right before the attack, Nia had stopped to help a woman who was struggling with a stroller exit a train at the MacArthur station. That same woman ran to Nia’s aid with a baby blanket to apply pressure to Nia’s wound to try and save her. Rather than remember her by the violence perpetrated against her, let us remember Nia Wilson for the strong, caring, “beautiful, sweet person” that she was to her family and community.

I encourage those who are able, to attend the vigil in her memory from 5:30pm to 8:30pm today at MacArthur BART station.
